One of the most common problem here in India is that people fails to realize that the hard formed mass is actually bad for the health of their gums and many believes that these masses actually hold up their teeth together and does no harm. The most common question and belief  that I have come across are like --
“If my tooth is plucked or treated, my eye sight will become poorer” or “Sir, after you have cleaned up my teeth I feel like gaps in between them.” Or”Sir, if I get my teeth cleaned then my tooth will become weak” and so on.

In dentistry we have a numerous studies regarding patient education and motivation. We know that people fails to belief the benefits of maintaining the oral health and has many biased believes which needs to be changed.

The pictures below are of two patients whom I had dealt earlier this year; both had the same problem of stone like deposits which we called calculus and tar.

For Patients :

*These white and brown deposits are called calculus with stains.
*They are the main cause for your dental problems and even lead to exfoliation of your tooth.
*Your gums will recede and the bone supporting the tooth will also get resorbed. (How? – Answer in short à Theses calcified masses called “calculus”, with the saliva forms a rich medium for bacterial growth. These bacteria forms toxins which are harmful for your oral tissues, and they become the primary reason for your periodontal/gum problems resulting in resorption of bone and loosening of tooth).

This can be prevented by visiting your dentist every 3 months and get a check up. We carefully inspect and perform the required procedures to keep your mouth healthy.
